The natural environment is one of the most important factors affecting the quality of life and health of human societies. In rural-urban areas that simultaneously have rural and urban characteristics, the destruction of natural resources and ecological changes can have serious consequences on the physical and mental health of residents. The present study aimed to identify and analyze natural environment indicators and examine their relationship with health-oriented development in rural-urban areas. This qualitative-exploratory research was conducted and data analysis was conducted using the theme analysis method. The statistical population included local experts (officials, environmental specialists, health activists, and informed villagers). The sampling method was snowball and the researcher achieved theoretical saturation through semi-structured interviews with 9 experts. An in-depth review of qualitative data and their systematic coding led to the extraction of five main themes. The research findings were categorized into five main themes including the quality of natural environment elements, vegetation and biodiversity, environmental and institutional management, public participation and awareness, and health-oriented environmental consequences. Each of these themes has sub-themes and basic themes that were extracted from the interview texts. The results show that the decline in water, air and soil quality, the destruction of vegetation, poor waste and sewage management and the lack of environmental education are among the most important environmental threats in Vajargah, which have direct consequences on the physical and mental health of residents. Also, low public participation, distrust in local institutions and the lack of health-oriented policies are considered important challenges in the path of sustainable development of the region. This research emphasizes the need to review environmental policies, strengthen social participation, improve environmental infrastructure and raise public awareness in line with health-oriented development. The findings of this research can be used as a basis for designing operational programs, local policy-making and future studies.
