Urban poverty

IUESA: Undoubtedly, poverty is one of the unpleasant issues in today’s world. Although all people know it, explaining poverty is a bit difficult as it differs in each culture and country. In other words, poverty in New York is different from poverty in Mumbai. However, almost everyone agrees that urban poverty has been changed into a global issue.

Although there is no single and comprehensive definition of urban poverty, in fact, it can be stated that urban poverty means not having revenue and deprive from health facilities.

According to the World Bank, those who earn less than one dollar in a day are poor.  Multi-dimensional poverty may be the most exact definition i.e. economically, socially, culturally, environmentally, Saman Valinoori, an urban expert said.

1,200,000,000 people in absolute poverty

According to the statistics, nearly 1,200,000,000 people live in absolute poverty in the world. 750 million people are hungry in the world. There are 50 million illiterate children in India. All of these issues are part of poverty.

40 percent of the poor live in the South Asia

40 percent of the poor live in the South Asia and the average income of 20 rich countries in the world equals 38 times more than 28 poor countries. This means that poverty distribution is extremely unbalanced.
